Rock City aka Mwanza, Tanzania. Bismarck Rock.
Atop a rock alongside Lake Victoria and Bismarck Rock in Mwanza, I stood overlooking one of the Great Lakes of Africa. From this lake–the eighth largest in the world–water flows to the “White Nile,” one of two that flow to the Nile.
Mwanza is Tanzania’s second largest city (population). It had a second-city gritty feel to it, like Oakland to San Francisco, or Brooklyn to Manhattan, or Chicago to New York. Called “Rock City,” large rocks form the first environment, with homes, roads, and other “built” environments created on top of, alongside, and with rocks that make up the town.
